The Future of Work

The future of work will be more flexible, more efficient, and more innovative. Today, if you're an employee of a company, you work for that company for a given period of time on a given set of responsibilities. You are typically given a specific role. You may have a certain degree of autonomy, or you may not. If you decide to work on other things during working hours, you normally cannot. You therefore typically have no flexibility to work on other things during working hours when you're an employee of a company. You have basically contracted away your freedom of work in return for certain things, amongst others, a salary. If you're a first-time founder, you are taking a risky bet on turning a startup into a profitable company. In contrast to an employee, you as a founder enjoy freedom of work. You as a founder have flexibility. However, you accept the risk of an uncertain outcome. It's a trade-off. If you're doing a student job during university, you're typically contracting away a given set of hours of your time in return for money. If you're a freelancer, you're typically skilled in certain skills, and you're offering that as an independent professional, exchanging your time in return for money. However, you decide how much of your time to exchange for how much money. Of course, your prices must be competitive usually. Freelancing is not for everyone. In contrast to an employee, a freelancer has no job security. A freelancer, as they commonly say, lives from paycheck to paycheck, apparently. The greater degree of flexibility of work that a freelancer has, comes with a cost therefore. Whether you choose to become an employee, a founder, or a freelancer, you're trading off freedom of work and financial risk, amongs other things.
